Town Tartans
Hey guys,
I found a neat tartan, but don't know where to find it. It's the Greenock tartan. It would be nice to get some of it, as I was born there... sort of a way to show respect. I saw a Paisley District as well, which was where I was transferred to not long after (Paisley Hospital), but I would rather find the Greenock pattern. Anyone have resources for this? I checked the Tartan Museum's districts, and couldn't find it, although there was an Aberdeen (the name Moir was common in the Aberdeen area). All interesting options, but some are much harder to find than others. Anyone care to share sources perhaps? The main ones I know of area Tartan Museum (awesome), and Scotwebstore (decent selection, with varying prices, some incredibly high due to custom weaving, or rarity). Any shared info would be nice.

town tartans...
Try Matt's web site:
www.district-tartans.com
There are a number of tartans associated with towns listed there.

Wow, that Greenock tartan is a new one (March 2006). No information on the Scottish Tartans Authority web site other than the designer's name.
I'd contact Brian Wilton of the STA at enquiries@tartansauthority.com and just ask him if he's aware of any company weaving it. It's possible, since it is a new town design, that some company has produced it for sale in or around Greenock. Worth a shot!

Matt, thanks for the email contact. Perhaps that might yield some info. March '06... yeah, talk about new huh! Still, I find it quite intriguing. I cannot remembernow if Paisley Hospital was in Greenock, or not. I have to double check with my parents. I could swear that I was born in Paisley Hospital, which means it's in Greenock, but then transferred to Glasgow, now that I think of it (as the hospital there was better equipped to handle premature births)...it's been a while since I have thought about to the few places I had been jumped to after birth. Ha ha ha....typically not something I tend to think about. I know the town of my birth (Greenock), and where we had lived (Dunoon), which most people find more than sufficient.
I wonder if there is a tartan for Dunoon...

Huh, your first post and the subsequent links had me wondering the same thing. Don't know much about tartan's, but the closest I could find was the Argyll district tartan which apparently goes by many names:
Argyll
ITI No. 002079
MacCorquodale
ITI No. 003345
Campbell of Cawdor
ITI No: 000002
If I'm mistaken about these all being the same pattern, would appreciate someone giving me a heads-up. Thanks.
Best regards,
Jake

Yeah, even if I could dig up an appropriate district tartan for the area, that would be cool as well (I like variety, and I don't want to wear a different clan's tartan...except maybe in the interest of re-enactment). In the same vein, I don't want to wear the tartan of a district that I have no connection with.

So, with a tidbit of searching, it appears that Dunoon is in the Argyll district. We moved while I was still young enough to not care about such things as addresses and such. Someone correct this if I am wrong please. It seems that Greenock is in the Inverclyde District, and the district appears to have no tartan of its own, which would leave me to track down (hopefully) someone who is making the Greenock tartan.

Dunoon is definitely in Argyllshire, both Greenock and Dunoon might also be considered Strathclyde as well (at least they are in the jurisdiction of the Strathclyde Police).
Best regards,
Jake
