Gauging HR re kilted at the office

I thought I'd wait a full month before approaching HR to see how they'd feel about me coming into the office kilted. I almost made it to a month...

My HR rep seems open to the idea and is going to run it up the HR flagpole. She really isn't sure what the reaction will be.

Didn't run it by my manager yet since HR would be the ultimate arbiter if anyone yapped. I suspect he'll support me as long as I'm not doing it for the sake of attention-getting behavior.

Here's hoping I'm among an enlightened crowd.

My employer won't allow me to wear a kilt to work. But, it's not because of the appearance. It's a safety issue. I work in a laboratory with various moving machines.

It all depends on the nature of the business, right? I'm in IT support, and previously was with a University and it was a non-issue.

I'm of the "It's easier to get forgiveness than it is to get permission" mindset. I also think it's easier to get "permission" to wear a kilt at work if you showed up for the interview in one.

Though I'm self-employed I do have many, many clients ... I get business in a kilt before I do business in a kilt. No permission necessary, no sense of a "bait and switch" situation with my clients (bosses). No, "By the way, did I mention I prefer to wear kilts," once they see me in the field with their customers and sub-contractors.

I do hope you are allowed to wear your kilts at work. No doubt the more organizations that allow kilts the better ... it takes courage to try and it is only the efforts of those who try that result in more and more of us being able to ..............

Aye, good luck.

I'm here at work in my new USA Kilt casual Douglas modern. Can't hurt to decorate your work area with a few things Scottish to play up the cultural diversity angle.
