Here's a funny snippet of a conversation I had in a store a week ago:

Store Clerk: That's cool. Are you part of a ...thing or something?
    Me: Nah, just being Scottish.
    Clerk: Ah, ok.
Me: Though I guess that is sort of a 'thing'.

I have an odd and kind of dry sense of humour sometimes. That was great!

I'm sure it's just me being a bit sensitive, but it irks me a bit when people ask me "what's the occasion" when I'm wearing a kilt. My response to folks who ask this question (or any of the variants, such as "Do you play?" or the famous "Are you Irish?") is "I just like it."

Watching people mentally scamper around trying to process the idea that someone would wear a kilt just because "they like it" makes me giggle a bit.

When I'm asked what the occasion is I usually say "It's (insert day of the week)". Leaves em a bit puzzled, but I suppose most get it eventually.

I use that one a lot myself. Thank You is by far the best response to the compliments.

The most frequent is "I like your kilt." I've only had one girl call it a skirt.
The second is "I had to know!", usually in a somewhat flustered tone.
