When I'm asked what the occasion is I usually say "It's (insert day of the week)". Leaves em a bit puzzled, but I suppose most get it eventually.

I use that one a lot myself. Thank You is by far the best response to the compliments.

The most frequent is "I like your kilt." I've only had one girl call it a skirt.
The second is "I had to know!", usually in a somewhat flustered tone.
