Do you really believe that you suddenly going to steer the fashion world of men to kilts? Kilts have legitamately stood on their own for a very long time and will continue to do so.

    on the other hand.....

If "fashion freedom" for men is your goal, there are other forums on the net much more sharply focussed on that issue then Xmarks.

Whatever... Try to relax and let things happen. You'll enjoy your outings alot more.

My point is that you have a REASON to wear a kilt.

Wouldn't it be nice to someday not NEED a reason? I know you might not care or might not understand.

Women when they wear pants or a skirt don't need to GIVE a reason. It would be nice if men someday had the same freedom.

Today we don't, at least if we're not Scottish we don't.

I'm kinda curious why some dress codes call for Dockers. Personally, I think Dockers look like crap.

Well....here is a question....did Steven Villeges invent the Utilikilt to just sell it to a few people in Seattle, or did he want to blanket the world with them? Did he just want to get rich and famous or did he want to start a revolution that would take over the world? Did he envision selling every kilt that would ever be made or did he want to start a movement that would change the world?

When Thomas Edison invented the light bulb did he want to manufacture every light bulb or did he want to let his invention run wild and bring light into every corner of the world?

I don't know what Steven Villeges' vision for the kilt is but it is my wish that someday every man would have the freedom to wear one without being called names, losing friends, alienating family, losing jobs, or whatever. If that means that the Utillikilts company grows to be the size of Sears and JC Penny combined, then so be it.

    Todd -

I respect and envy you for having an understandable reason for wearing the kilt.

I have been told by people that it is wrong and just WEIRD for me to wear one since I am not Scottish.

My respect for your Scottish traditions is one of the reasons I asked early on if Scottish people weren't upset about all the contemporary variations of the kilt and how we are "stealing" the traditional meaning of the kilt and reducing it to just another garment alongside the cargo shorts in the closet.

As far as I am concerned, there are TRADITIONAL kilts and then there are these "modern things" we are calling kilts and in my mind they are totally different.

We've already got the freedom to wear what we want wherever we want.As for being able to wear one without being called names, losing friends, alienating family, losing jobs etc, that day will never come. Why? Because we are all different, different values, outlook, background and so forth. It's what makes us human beings.

    Phil,

Everyone that is a member XMarks has a *reason* why they wear a kilt wether it be for comfort, heritage, a desire to not blend in with everyone else, or a mixture of these things.

The kilt will always be associated with Scotland - even the Utilikilts that you and I wear. Some of us wear a kilt everyday, while others wear them a few times a year. Some of us enjoy wearing both traditional and non-traditional kilts. Others prefer traditionals only, or non-traditionals only. We all respect each others reasons for our choices.

You are not going to escape stares and questions (including are you Scottish), or even the occasional off-color remark if you elect to wear a kilt in public - it comes with the territory. I'm getting the impression that you would like to see as many men as possible wearing kilts (non-traditionals in particular) as soon as possible so that the stares and questions go away.

Just be yourself. Answer questions in a courteous, matter-of-fact manner. Throw in a little humor now and then - it puts people at ease. Many times those initial questions can lead to many interesting conversations on a number of topics - not just kilts. And when you take the time to converse with people, you will leave people with a favorable impression of yourself, and the kilt.

As far as wearing kilts to work, have you asked your immediate supervisor about it? There are members that have asked permission to wear a kilt at work and have gotten the ok to do so.

Dude, have you been to the Utilikilts website? All the answers that you seek are there. You just have to look carefully and you will realise Steve's vision and why he started the company.

I don't know what planet you live on, but I have to yet to loose any friend, alienated any family or lost a job because my kilts. In fact, I have gained friends and gained many business contacts because of my kilts. You oughtta take it easy with your new found 'freedom' and stop being militant about your feeling and force your belief down people's head. you will live longer.

    .
I am saturating the entire Phoenix area with the vision of Utilikilts in order to promote fashion freedom for men.

However, this is as much freedom as I ever want them to have. Shorts, pants, and kilts. That's all.

I won't approve any other male garments for the Phoenix area.

One of two things will happen. Either the stares and questions will go away or I will get used to them. It sounds like it will probably be the latter and not the former.
