As others have said "Crikey!" is all that comes to mind. It is truly sad news and I feel for is family, it seemed that Terry and Steve where true soul mates especially with their love for all animals. As sad as it is that his kids will grow up without their father they do have his many films to see what he meant to nature and what nature meant to him.

    Rest in peace Steve

I just heard a few hours ago, his wife was walking here in Tassie at the time too.

Heck I've been nose to nose with huge stingrays while diving, had them swim over the top of me, I would have never thought they would kill someone.
Steve must have grabbed it by the tail or something.

Either way, it's a tragic loss to Australia and the world, he was a great guy.
I feel most sorry for poor Bindi & her little brother, now without a Dad, and a Dad who loved his family.

No, experts have viewed the footage of the attack - he was swimming over the top of the stringray that was on the ocean floor and apparently the animal felt trapped by Steve, freaked out, and that's why it attacked.

They said it was a totally freak accident, that it should not have happened, and if it had stung him anywhere else it probably would not have been fatal.

I heard about it last night and was totally shocked. The world has lost a great man.

As a biology teacher and herpetologist myself, I am shocked and deeply saddened. My students know how much I thought of Steve and his mission, so returning to classes tomorrow will be hard.

    We'll miss you, Steve-o.
