It can mean either "a big, dumb, generally blue-collar male" or "a big, dumb, generally black (Jamaican) male."
The first definition is certainly derogatory. The second is as well, with the added benefit of being offensive.

re: jamoke
...I never heard of the reference to Jamaicans...in Chicago it's more like the first definition: just a general name for a dopey mope who just clods their way through life slow on the uptake...it is, believe me, one of the lesser insults in Chicago-ese....kind of on a par with telling someone that they are "goofy".

Just as an off side, there is the possiblility that the guy made an honest mistake. I have seen folks complety absorbed into what they were doing that everything around them that they *should* have noticed, they didn't. That would explain why he and his buddy quietly left after noticing that the dance instructor wasn't the only one wearing a kilt after making his comment. (Which could have been a tartan close to his daughters school uniform) Then again, I wasn't there, he could have been a total jerk about it as well with the way he said it.
Just thought I would put that out there. There has been more than one occasion that I have embarrassed myself with a remark that came out of my mouth before my brain had a chance to engage.

Hey AA, while I would love to believe that the guy just did not understand that their was a Celtic festival going on, I know how the event is laid out and he would have passed about 75-100 guysd kilted between leaving the game and getting to the dancers, unless they changed the layout this year. Definitely a jamoke, and possibly somewhat worse.

Well, but according to AA, there was a dearth of kilts at the festival this year. Still he probably was a jamoke, and full of cheap Soldiers Field beer to boot.

Well, I tried to make my point in a subtle manner before, but maybe I need to make another stab at it:
While I'm fairly sure that it's not intended in that fashion, posts on this thread persist in using a term that could very easily be construed as a racial slur.
I'm not immune to the pleasures of enjoying a well-crafted insult, but we should strive to be creative enough with our gibes that we refrain from insulting the innocent.
