Translated as "Keep the Yoke", based on story of a farmer and his two sons who were plowing fields near where Scottish King Kenneth III fought the invading Danes in 971. The Danes broke the King's men. Seeing them flee, Hay snatched up a Ox yoke and, with his sons, rallied the Scots and defeated the Danes.

My forum name comes from the Hay battle cry: A Hay! A Hay! A Hay!

We also have "Do Well and Let Them Say...Gordon!" although "Animo non Astutia" is my preferred.

Both the Gordon, and the Muir motto has been posted already.
BUT, I have also heard Bydand as being interpreted as "Standing Fast" from one of the Gordon video tapes I have.
Too bad Animo non Astutia isb;t on the badge, I rather like that one.
I also like to think that the translation of the Muir motto is fairly direct, but then again, it is a translation of Latin, I believe. Although I am still learning more about the Muir side of things...since this is newer information to me.

From my best memory, Mottos (what is put on clan badges and flags/banners) are based on the old war cries (even listed as such in some old books).
Most clans also have longer slogans and "proverbs" that are used in various other contexts.
Clans I am pretty sure i have ties to:
MacNeil
Wallace
Gordon
Gunn
MacTavish
MacLeod
Probably a few more as well.
And:
MacBubba (Clan society international)
MacWage (me and my cousins)
MacArolin (Sons-and daughters- of the Carolinas)

If that is the case, I'll go with "Stand Fast!" as the translation for the Gordon motto Bydand.
I just can't see rallying a wavering line in battle by yelling "Remain!", or "Abide!". Stand Fast as a translation goes better with the slogan "By Courage, Not Craft".
