We don't need approval (or indeed disapproval) but whereas the latter is a pain the former is usually a nice way of striking up a conversation and passing the time of day.

I wasn't discourteous nor would I be. These folks are my friends. I'm just searching for the right thing to say that doesn't sound contrived. I think I found it.
