A single closure device may work just fine but I don't think it looks as nice. I'll stay with the "standard 3 straps and buckles. All of my kilts have them. I like the way they look.

    Cool

Nothing wrong with that, Blu! The kilted tent is a big tent, and there's even room for people who only like, say, Utilikilts! (Long as they behave themselves, of course!)

My kilt (MOD model from Thos. Gordon and Sons) has no fastening on the left whatsoever. Works fine. I removed the lower of the two straps on on the right myself.

I have a three-strap kilt and a two-strap kilt. The three-strap model fits much better.

I cannot imagine why anyone would not buckle the underapron strap.

I'm also a member of the "3 strappers"...the 3rd strap has maybe has no real function, but it's often the only strap visible and I like the look of the straps.

Aye lads don't take me wrong

I'm not arguing against the traditional three straps and buckles. I like the look and the feel of strapping up, and I appreciate and honor the traditional look and the "kilt-do" (way of the kilt).

At the same time, I am curious about the "whys" of kilt-do and of kilt construction. I want to know why things are as they are, and why they're not different.

I'm mostly conservative---I do believe in change, but not for it's own sake. I think things ought to change when it's a change for the better, and generally an evolutionary step at that, with a main chance of springing back if it proves a MIS-STEP.

I've been losing weight, and I haven't gotten the SWKs in to have the straps adjusted (if it keeps up, I'd be better to sell them and get new ones). In order to have the kilt fit me snugly, I left the left side strap undone, and was surprised to find that the wearing o' the kilt was in no wise affected.

For an admittedly casual look, I enjoy the SWK Irish National with only a single strap at the right waist, but its a daily knock-around go-to-the-grocery-store kilt.

I can entirely understand why people would think me daft.

    Talking apron sag

    Pleater
I to have had some of my kilt inside apron sag in the center, so I sowed a little velcro on the inside between the inner and outer apron in front. Problem solved.
Also this is a way to hold the kilt tight in place around yourself while buckling and belting and or just buckling..

I was under the impression that the underapron was buckled so it would hold the kilt in place, and the over apron was to be buckled slightly looser so it would be flat across the front without distortion. If buckled that way the kilt doesn't tend to sag on the inside.

All of the kilts I make have only two buckles - one per side. To me the kilt is about symetry and the third buckle throws things off visually to my mind. It also gets in the way of my sporran strap or chain and causes it to hang lop-sided!
The only kilt I have that has three buckles is a military Black Watch. With such a high rise, the third buckle is needed. This, of course, is the origin of the third buckle anyway.
