I need your opinions

Hey Dale,

If you are thinking more of a contemporary styled kilt, think Freedom Kilts. They are a little more $ but are made to your sizing. I have heard nothing but good things about them. click on their ad above.

As far as more traditional styled kilt, USA Kilt and SWK are two very good options for your $. To me, there are 2 items to help you decide:
1. do you want the kilt sized to your measurements (aka USA Kilt)
2. is 24" standard length of a SWK okay for you.

USA Kilt has more tartan choices as well.

I guess I am shorter than others, or something. My other two kilts are 21" and I have to wear them way above my naval to make them come to mid knee or to the top of my knee, and I even paid to have them shortened to 21 inches.

I am looking into all the options mentioned so far. It is as bad as doing plumbing, SO Many choices and you have to have the right part. ha ha

My decision is narrowing down, but now comes the hard part. I told my wife about wanting another kilt, and I decided since I already have two UK's, I should try something else. I am going with the USA Kilts just because the SWK are way too long for me.

I showed her the USA ones and we both agreed we don't like the red tartans, at least on me. Then she said, "I really like the kilts to be fuller." I mentioned that they cost more and I can't afford that right now. So now we have picked out 4 tartans, that I might get samples so I can check it with some of the clothes I have. But my wife also said, "If there is some red in the tartan, you do have a red shirt!"

I am one of those who research, check things out, think about them and then decide before buying. It took me two years of doing that before I got a piercing.

Do the USA kilts come with an option of wider belt loops? I thought when a sporan is worn, the belt is just over the kilt for decoration?

Do they all come with fringe or are they plain? There aren't many pictures on the site. I am looking at the Buccleuch, Gordon Dress, Scottish National, or the Thomson Grey.

If any of you have a kilt picture with any of these tartans, either send them to me or point me to a link.

You can get wider belt loops or none - rocky will do either.

Fringe or no fringe is up to you as well - it can be left off. most opt to have it.

Don't have any links, but try Riverkilt's gallery. I think he has two of those.

I got my SWK hemmed for $15. She did complain a bit that it was quite a job with all those pleats, but she does all of my kilts. She's doing three SKs for me right now, sewing the pleats down, hemming, and belt loops. I get the remnants back to make flashes.

I don't think anyone asked . . .

Do you have any clan ties (if so, which ones)?

Do you want a "universal" tartan (if so, what color pallet)?

Many tartans have the basic colors of red, blue, and/or green. A few have others. Do you want a common tartan (like black watch or royal stewart-> VERY different pallets) or an uncommon one (like Scotland National) or one that used to be very common, but is now not as much (like Caledonia-> seen on me in the Hartwell pics, a mix of red, blue, green with black, white, and yellow).

In short, pick one YOU like, but know what it is and what it means.

I hear many, many good things about USA Kilts, and he is a pleasure to work with. For th buck, I'd go for them.

I have a traditional ($700Cdn) MacIntosh hunting kilt, along with a tan and a Stewart black SportKilt. I'm looking to buy a couple more kilts for this year and am trying to get feedback from threads/bbs such as this one. SportKilts are fine, but I'm not keen on the elastic back on them. For a traditional fit and feel, what do you "MUGgers" think of USAKilts and NeoKilts? A black kilt could be one of my choices, and since I'm of the MacIntosh clan, I couldn't wear any of the other clan tartans offered (except district tartans, Stewart, Black Watch...)

I'm looking at the Renegade Kilts, and they look good, too. Anyone have one and wish to comment a comparison?
