			Two New Kilts

Below are the two kilts I've been working on since July. I used "The Art of Kiltmaking" as my guide. The only tghing I didn't do is hand stitch the pleats. I used my sewing machine to sew those. I tried to hand stitch, but I just couldn't get it to look right. I know that they are not perfect and they do have their flaws, but they are mine, made by my own hand. There is somehting gratifying about that. The first is Barclay modern hunting. I used to wear this material as a "great kilt". I bought the material 6 years ago from tartanweb.com. I think it is a 13oz. material. It is pleated to the stripe. 9yds of material used.

The next is 16oz MacDougal. I bought this material from Fraser and Kirkbright Weaving. I have no affiliation to MacDougal, it was $15 a meter. I actually used this material for a practice run. This tartan has an 11 inch sett which gives the kilt very deep pleats. I used 10yds in this kilt.

Sorry about the quality of the photos. I had to use a tripod. I'll get better pics this weekend from the TN Highland games.

I hope this has inspired someone else to make their own. You'll appriciate what the professionals have to go through.

 Good on ya!

Those look sharp. And yes, I just might have to get started making my own kilt. But first I need to make the targe that I have most of the materials for and then the sporran that I have plenty of leather for. Then maybe, just maybe I'll have time to look for some material.

Looking really good. I'm certainly inspired, but unless I learn to use a machine it'd all have to be by hand.

well, sort of. I've been looking at that MacDougall tartan on F&K's website as well. And to make matters worse, I have a [distant] connection, which made it even more difficult to resist.

I bought some of the tartan to have a go myself. It semed such a bargain. The tartan is very nice indeed. However, I looked up McDougal on the various tartan sites and I couldn't find any with the same sett. I wonder if you have found any?
