Your son has a much cooler head that I do. Someone says something, meh, a quick remark is enough to shut them up. Someone takes a swing at me, and it's on... I just won't take that sort of thing from anyone, unless it's a friend and we're goofing off/rough housing, and there is an obvious difference in that respect. Good for me that people don't try to seriously mess with me... most people are all talk and no action. Did the guy who sucker punched your son do it with about 4 of his friends at his back? People who do those sorts of things typically do... it is the cowards way after all.
So, props to your son for maintaining a level head, I am not the only guy on here who openly admits that sort of thing would have ended in a scrap.

... my son did not make a big deal about this incident, but alot of his friends did.

Your sons' positive attitude will take him far in life, unlike the other unfortunate soul.

... I suspecte the guy who punched him was probably just jealous because of his own inadequacy....

I known a few bullies in my time and I don't think any of them ever felt a sense of self worth without puting someone else down.
