Cold Weather Kilting?

I've been pretty much a full time kilt wearer (except work) since June. I'd like to keep it up as long as possible but I'm also not one of those people that's always hot no matter the weather. And it's getting cold quick.

So far, I plan on wearing:
-Utilikilt Workman (a little chilly so far)
-WPG 22 oz. MOD Kilt (awesome for the cold so far)
-8 yd. 16 oz. Trad Kilt
-SWK Heavyweight
-SWK Standard

I also prefer to wear my hose scrunched with boots rather than at the knee but I may have to alter that for the cold. Boots and knee high hose look a little goofy though.

Any advice or recommendations?

It snowed here (Southern Wisconsin) today. I wore my 13 oz. wool and was fine! Of course, I wrapped myself in my fly plaid too....almost looked like i was wearing a Great Kilt!

Here in Phoenix, if it gets below 60ºF (15.6ºC) it's considered a cold spell. In fact today's high temp is suppose to be 92ºF (33.3ºC).

It's 50* and steadily moving lower.

And windy too...with the accompanying windchill factor.

I also don't have much "natural insulation".

For your body to retain heat it is proven that there are certain areas of your body which you must keep warm for the rest of you to feel warm.

First and most importantly is your head. Put on a hat.

Second is the area of your back between your shoulder blades and up the back of your neck. Wear a jacket.

Third is your mouth. Breathing in cold air that then needs to be warmed and then exhaling the warm air is just throwing away the heat. Wrap a scarf around your mouth and nose.

Fourth is the back of your hands. You can cut the fingers off gloves and still have your hands feel warm.

Last are the tops of your feet. Nice wool kilt hose help here.

Keep these areas covered and warm and the rest of you will feel warm.

Having bare legs does not cause as much heat lose as most people think, so kilt wearing is perfectly warm down to temps. that would be too cold even with trousers.

Wind chill is the danger while kilted. At temp. and wind combinations that lower the wind chill below 0 f or -32c you may feel warm but the exposed skin of the knees may frost bite.

I wore kilts through last winter (down to about 30 degrees F or so) and had no problem w/ kilt hose and the kilt. Felt fine.

And at least one can still pee quite easily, unlike the little boy who gets all bundled up to go play in the snow and then has to "go." ha ha kilts are good!

I am a pragmatist. I also hate the cold weather... tough considering I live in Ontario where temps can fall well below zero F. in the depths of winter. It snowed today - a harbinger of days to come.

If it gets too cold... I wear trousers. In the past, and on accasion still do wear kilts in some pretty brutal conditions... but not as a general rule.

Warm kilt hose are important to me this time of year. I do wear them with boots and then change into shoes indoors... nobody has ever commented to me that kilt hose with boots looked goofy - in winter, health and survival overrules fashion.
