I have been an avid paintball player since the mid 80's and almost always play in a kilt these days. In fact, I'm playing tomorrow in one. I DO wear a cup while playing, however.
I mostly play stock class pump paintball and several of my buddies play kilted as well. I had a few threads with pics up awhile back.

Many moons ago, my fiancee and I were gearing up for a night of indoor paintball with some other students from the college, and I took a bit of ribbing from one overly-macho doofus about the fact that I'd slipped an athletic up into my pants before we got started.
My fiancee managed to sneak up on him while he was prone, and was standing just short of his feet (with him on his stomach) when she requested his surrender.
He rolled over on his back, and got her in the facemask from about six feet away - raising a welt on her face through the vents in the mask.
She rather calmly lowered her gun and shot him several times in the groin (think about the direction, if she's standing at his feet while he's lying on his back) from the same distance. The reaction was... spectacular.
If you wanna play stupid, expect to be shot in the same fashion.

That's Great!
Give your wife a kiss from me...as a "thank you" for giving that guy what he deserves.

I would be too worried about the effect of the paint on my kilt(s)!

I'm a paintball player and I wouldn't play in a kilt. I'm mostly into woodsball, so the trees and rocks wouldn't be very kind to bare legs let alone the paint itself. I don't even think I'd play speedball in a kilt......how do you slide into bunkers ChefDave?
McClef, the paint is water soluable so as long as you can throw your kilt in the washing machine you're pretty much good to go. Some fill is a little thicker but most rec ball paint comes out easily.
What kind of setup do you have ChefDave? I currently have a cheaper Spyder Xtra, but it still provides loads of fun.

I've played in my UK Workmans before and found the experience to just fine.
I wore bike shorts underneath and knee pads, less from protection against paintballs but for comfort in the kneeling position on rocky ground. I wore wool socks pulled up, and a long sleeved T-shirt.
I got hit pretty much everywhere and none of it really hurt. Torso shots felt about like you'd expect, and a couple shots I took in the unprotected shin and calf didnt hurt either. No welts, no broken skin, not even any bruising.
Think about this though... if you are wearing pants, you have a single layer of tight material covering the "boys", and it isnt going to protect you much against any impact in that area. Now in a kilt I have a double layer apron of rather thick material, hanging loosely in front of the same area, that will swing and absorb impact if it should take a shot. I was HOPING someone would shoot me there, it was the best protect area on my body!
The only "injury" I took was some scratches to the shins when I ran through a briar patch. Of course the guy I was with who wore pants got scratched just as much as I did.

To answer your question neo71665 I run one of 2 setups. A nearly stock Tippmann 98 Custom and an old-school stock Tippmann 68 Special. I'm considering looking into an autococker though but i don't know what kind.
Also, I wore 2 pairs of thick socks to protect my legs but no knee pads. I do plan on getting a pair for the next time if I do it again.
Those are some pretty cool pictures ChefDave, i wish i could have gotten some pictures from when i played yesterday. There would have been some very entertaining ones.
Yaish, I ended up with injuries the same way, i have several large scrapes on both legs from briars.

I play woodsball myself but I don't think I'd do it kilted. There's too much extra material to get snagged on branches, etc. as I'm running/crawling through the brush.
I will be bringing a kilt to change into at the end of the day as my cammies get way too filthy to wear in the car.
My gear is a Tippman A-5 with flatline barrel and response trigger.

I don't do paint ball either, but I did consider kilted hunting. That thought occurred only briefly, then I thought about all of the briars and decided against it.
