Finally gave the saffron kilt a go. Wore it Fri evening to the Holiday Bazaar here on post. Got quite good reactions from several people. First was from two older women. They complemented the kilt, asked if it was irish saffron, then asked if we did Scottish country dancing. She also said I was really brave for wearing a kilt. I asked what was brave about wearing clothes. Later one of the vendors stopped me. He is from England. His initial comment was "that's an unusual look for an American". We had a good long talk. He also told a story about a buddy of his that is a Scot and wears a kilt fairly frequently. Once they were in a pub and the question came up and was discussed. His friend, having had quite a few drinks, said he was a proper Scot and proceeded to raise the front of his kilt and prove it. Another vendor, a Frenchman, gave me a tip of his hat as I walked by.
Sat I wore it to Rothenberg while we did some Christmas shopping. We ate at an Italian place there. We eat there fairly often in fact. A month or so ago we ate there and I was kilted and caught the attention of the waitress. The guy taking our order asked if we had been here last month. We have eaten there probably every 5-8 weeks for the past 4 years and they just now remember us. Only because of the kilt.
After Rothenberg we went back to the bazaar on post. The ladies manning the credit card approval booth were quite interested in the kilt and the pin. One told me that her daughter had said there was a man in a dress. She told her it was a kilt and he would probably kick your butt for calling it a dress. I later saw her telling the girl about the kilt pin.
Saw a couple of folks we haven't seen in a bit that have never seen me kilted. One asked if it was a Ren Fair outfit or reenactment outfit. I told her it was a Fri night at 2000 hrs outfit. She wanted to know if the decision was religious, medical, heritage, or why wear it at all. I told her it was fashion (kilts look good), comfort, and because I could. She then asked my wife what she thought of them. She thinks I look good in them and said so. None of the others we talked to even seemed to notice what I was wearing. Also interesting to us was the lack of obvious looking by the large number of those still in uniform. We've decided that enough folks in the community have seen me and are used to me now.
