Before the pic of the saffron piper was posted it really never registered how nice a pair of black hose look in a formal outfit. I feel a change in perspective happening.
I agree with Cavscout. For most of my life I had seen mainly off-white hose with formal wear, and sometimes diced or tartan, so I guess I got used to those being the "standard". But also, this was in the day of frilly formal shirts in light lime green, with big, dark green velvet bow ties. Don't laugh; that's what I was married in the first time around. Since then, formal wear has evolved into different forms, although basic black and white tie outfits have stuck around as well. I personally really like knit tartan hose for formal, but I still like my off-white hose for a dressy look as well. I think that a formal look can be achieved in many other ways, depending on the taste of the wearer.

The only time off-white looks good to me is literally when you have white shoes on. Or, yes, with the ghillie brogues. Otherwise, it looks almost as bad as people wearing white athletic sox with black shoes. *gak*, to quote my cat as he's getting ready to cough up a hairball. So, not surprisingly, I wear my off-white KH when I'm wearing a pair of running shoes. I usually go bottle green or black for more formal wear or when I'm not wearing white shoes.

Seems to me if a kilt is red and black tartan then one leg should have red a hose and the other leg should have a black hose.
Same with other tartans. Take the two major colors of the tartan pattern and wear one color on each leg.

Jesters do it all the time. Why not?

That is a good idea Ron, you would always have another pair just exactly like the ones you have on in your sock drawer at home.

As for being the other side of the pond in the UK, 90% of the time you will only see off white hose being used, I do have a pair of blue hose to wear with my blue Argyll Jacket and black for funerals.

However, if you're planning on Googling for it, try "parti-colored," "particolored," "parti-coloured," or "particoloured."

well look at it this way for the black hose......

when you got to a black tie event (for everyday wearers before you wore the kilt)

    what color were your socks?

    BLACK!

would you dare wear white no way!

black socks should be perfectly acceptable for formal wear!

Black socks make kilt-wearers look bottom-heavy. Too much black dominates the kilt and ruins the look.

If you want your legs covered in black, you might as well wear the tux pants.

I have to concur with P1M (& not just because he's a fellow clansman). I think he explained things very well.

It's all comes down to matching colors, balance & focus.

So, sometimes off-white would be the best choice, other times black or various colors... variety is the spice of life, after all...
