Wear what you want. I have three pairs, white, black, and khaki.
I like the black and the khaki the best though.
So that's where my bias comes from.

socks, hose, and wooly thingys
i picked up a couple pair at the ligonier games last month, or was it a few weeks ago, i forget, anyways, it COST ME 90 BUCKS!!!
one pair or tartan, another green something, very thick with the popcorn tops..
so, they look GOOD, the tartan/argyle i did a guess on what it would go with, and went for it..at 50 bucks for that pair, i will make them work..
i've gotten some thiner pairs, including black, maroon, and a blue, i can't get used to them..i look in the mirror, and i go back to the off white, so i suspect it's a matter of taste thingy.
i id however, send for some wader socks at sportsman's guide, and they are the thickest things i have ever had on, and the legging of either, ( a blackish, and an oatmeal like,,) are not too bad in color..
i do like the off white for dress..i think it shows the flashings better..BUT, i like the black, with my grey Mockers..
i wear ANY sports coat, so long as it's a nice plain color, not to overtake the kilt.
i think the jacobite shirts are just a little too costume like for me, and wear just a nice oxford, and tie.
no fur sporrans, i like the understatement of a plain black leather..
i also treat my AK plain kilts as jeans..so T's and boots are great, and no one comments on the color of hose..
i DO like the oatmeal colored hose i've seen ,and will get some..that color looks to be a nice taupe like color that is darker than cream, yet not black.
i figure, just the kilt is enough to carry the event, why over do it?
