I was just wondering the same thing! I've got a Leatherneck tartan Sportkilt---which I really like, by the way, but which I would NOT wear to the ball. (I'd jump into the Ramsay USA Semi-trad and use my subdued corporal's chevrons as a kilt pin.)

Rather than sidestep the issue... This might be a good excuse and time to invest in a nice jacket.

You might wear it only a few times a year, but the room will shine in your path when you do.

Well worth the investment, IMHO
