    8 yard kilt - 13 or 16oz?

This is for evening wear year round in a globally warmed Scotland. its probably the only new kilt i'll ever buy so i am anxious to get it right. Is either weight better and is the difference important; ie if first choice tartan is available in second choice weight of fabric do I go to 2nd choice tartan or stick with second choice fabric?

My current kilt is 60ish years old and i dont feel capable of doing the math to determine what weight it is.

My own feeling is that what I like most about kilts is the swishing feeling when dancing reels and that heavier probably = swishier.

    All advice gratefully received.

Welcome from Carlisle England--It depends what you will be using the kilt for ,eg. if its used only for functions & dances the lighter weight would be better (13oz). If you use it daily, out & about, then I would go for the heavier weight( 16 oz).

You can't go wrong with 16 oz. Particularly if its gonna be your only kilt.

There is a very noticable difference - the 16 oz having the better feel and sway.

As David says, depends on proposed use. 13oz will swing and swish almost as well as 16oz. I have two 16oz kilts which I wear for formal events - one in my family tartan for special events and one in all black wool which I wear for my part-time work as a District Court Assessor, though casually I wear 13oz kilts, or lightweight acryllic or polycotton ones. Before my wife became disabled we were into the Scottish Country dancing circuit and I preferred the 13oz weight for dancing. I've also done some piping in 13oz and 16oz kilts, preferring the 13oz in summer and 16oz in winter.

bobomacintosh, I agree with what the others have said. Will you be getting the kilt in the MacIntosh tartan? If so, you will be restricted in your choice depending on which tartan you choose. I think that Lochcarron has four MacIntosh tartans in 13 and 16 oz., but House of Edgar's Ancient Hunting MacIntosh only comes in 13 oz. (at least when I got mine). I would rather have had my kilt in 16 oz., but I preferred the House of Edgar tartan. I've worn both weights, and decided first choice tartan, second choice weight. Good luck; you can't go wrong with either 13 or 16 oz.

I went with 16 oz. I figured if you are going to order a new handsewn kilt, do it right, I will get a 13 oz next time around.

The 16 oz is by far the best value for the buck, you will be happy with your 16 oz kilt.

The 16oz can feel a bit much if you are using it primarily for dancing indoors, so I would choose the 13. If it will get a lot of wear for various occaisions, inside and out, go with the 16.
