I must agree with Beloitpiper.....Rugby shirts and hose/flashes/shoes just doesn't quite work right. Much better with boots and rolled down hose or boot socks. Don't worry too much about matching colours, the look you are going for is casual. Having said that I'd avoid real clashes of colour.

once I get my MacTavish (Thompson Red) tank in, I'll be wearing my blue and red rugby with the kilt, provided they match well enough. Otherwise I'll wear it with my Irish Saffron.

I tend to wear my solid color Rugby Jerseys w/ my tartan kilts and my striped Rugby Jerseys w/ solid kilts. I have no problem wearing proper shoes, hose and flashes w/ either. Boots are usually worn w/ the solid kilts and striped Jerseys w/ scrunched down hose or real hiking socks. O'Neille

A rugby shirt with a kilt will always look good to the supporters of that particular team!

I must get a Wales rugby shirt in time for the next six nations (a Scotland one too except for when they are playing Wales )

Formal wear and the Rugby shirt isn't my style, in my opinion the Rugby shirt with a more relaxed look would work much better.

I'd stick to solid shirts (or minimal striping) with tartan kilts. I agree it's a very nice look.

I would agree that the boots would look better and I'd go with the rolled down hose. I have some rugby shirts with a single stripe across the chest which I think I'll be able to get away with wearing a tartan. Mostly the solids are better looking if you can get them. I also wear the shirt out rather than tucked in but I also had the length of the thing shortened so it doesn't cover the sporran.

I think a striped rugby shirt would look best with a solid colored kilt.

You did match the colors well

I think the hose up/shoes look fits you better than wearing hose down/boots just because it's "casual"...

I like the look of a rugby shirt and kilt but tend to agree with the others, that since it's a casual look it'd look best with boots and pushed down hose.
What is it the wife doesn't like? The color combo? or the dress vs casual thing?
If it's the color combo... try a dark colored rugby shirt instead, like navy blue or hunter green perhaps.

I also generally go with the boots and untucked rugby shirt.
