I am not sure about the horizontal stripes with the plaid though. Try and find a more simple looking rugby shirt, or a National team jersey, they usually go better than the rugby shirts we can all usuaually get at old navy (though they have some nice plain ones right now.
I also wear boots with the hose pushed down when I am wearing a rugby shirt (sometimes even untucked).

Knowing you personally, I think that the hose and shoes works with YOU...and the outift. With me, for example, it would look odd. I might have picked a darker shirt....Hmmm. Not sure from the photo.
Here's a recommendation...try Big 5 Sports for some inexpensive black work boots. You can find, reasonably often, big, chunky black boots for ..*ahem*..cheap there. I just picked up a pair that fits just fine for $24. They'll last me a year or 18 months of 2-4 days/week wear..

I'm not sure if the "casual-booted" style is really YOU, actually, but at least you can try it for a few bucks. You are one of the few people I can honestly say that the word and appearrance of "gentleman" truly fits....*grin*... you are much better "gentleman" than "ruffian", so stick with what works.

Now, whether that's a compliment or not, I'm not sure!

I unfortunately don't know any X-markers personally. However, I'd tend to agree that Panache seems most at home in pictures that feature a slighlty more dressy style of clothing.

However, I do recall him in a pic wearing boots with a solid green Sportkilt? and thought he looked well put together.

For the most part I would say you know how to wear a kilt (this is of course is ignoring the Brigadoon look and I am not even going to touch the Dale Evans outfit - sorry somethings just don't work) and obviously your style of dress is a bit less casual than many here. Certainly rolled socks and boots would be a choice but a pair of coloured socks and less dressy shoes would work fine too. The stripe in the shirt is fine because of its scale compared to the kilt so I would wear it but I think darker colours might work better.

I've worn both Scotland, and NZ rugby jerseys with my kilt. Both jerseys are solid color. I wore the NZ with Hose up and flashes, and I wore the Scot jersey hose down with boots. Both worked well in my opinion. Anyway, you know what you're doing. Just go with your gut, and what your wife says.
