Dualist - started non-traditional, got some (more) traditionals.
I prefer the traditional styling, but for everyday use prefer non-traditional materials ... anyone know where I could get my hands on some tartan canvas on cotton duck? :rolleyes:

My current ratio is modern to traditional 3:1, soon to be 4:1, but I'd like to even the score one day. Still feel more comfortable with the moderns, I guess in part because they are more . . . pants-like (Gasp ). Hey, old habits die hard, and I like the pockets and general convenience.

So far,

I've ONLY seen one plaid-ish canvas.

BUT it was NASTY and the warp and weft did NOT match at all, nor did the lines line up with one another on either direction. Rather, they jump around, like the printer was hopping around.

It was at: 96 Fashion and Fabrics in Ninety-Six, South Carolina (USA).

OTHERWISE, a VERY nice fabric store, if weak on wools. By the way, they DO carry Tailor's Pride hair canvas.

As for the topic at hand, I only WEAR traditional and perfer tartan kilts. I think they look better, and are easier to explain, as they fit the "common idea" of what a kilt is. However, I respect those who wear modern ones, which also have a HUGE following (thus they must not be bad to wear).

As for me, the most "modern" I get in kilts themselves is Poly Viscose material (in tartan of course). As for accessories, I tend toward a real mix of traditional and modern. I wear modernist footwear with hose and flashes (a kilt just feels ODD to me without them), often with sweaters or even t-shirts. I am planning to make modern, clean Prince Charlie-esque and Argyle-esque jackets, meaning overall traditional lines, but with "streamlined" details. Such is more fitting with my personal tastes and style. It is, by nature, a blend of traditional and modern.

YET!!! As for the kilts themselves, I like traditionalist cuts and looks, even to the tartan.

Happy dualist. 4 tartan, 2 utilikilts. There are things I would do in a UK which I wouldn't in my tartan (like the garden this morning).

I'll have to go with dualist, but I think that the poll is a little narrow. Does modernist mean materials or construction? A USAK could certainly could be considered a modern from a materials point of view, but the semi-trad is certainly aimed at the traditional market, and follows those construction techniques, just using a different material. Conversely, a UK is certainly a modern kilt in both materials and styling, but someone could create a UK with a tartan pattern. What is the decision point then? I think that the lines are blurred, and without a discrete definition, the poll will of necessity end up at a mid-point.

And that is not meant to belittle the poll, I would like to know the split as well. I just think that we need to first come to an understanding of what we mean by the terms (right after we decide if a kilt is a skirt or not!), then we can vote appropriately.

Short answer? I'm a dualist. I started off more on the modern side and am inching back towards tradition....

I'm the exact opposite. I started with an 8 yard 16oz handsewn traditional because, at the time, I had no idea that there was anything else. "Kilt" as far as I knew, meant tartan, wool, handsewn, high-rise. Over the past 5 years, I've moved from strict traditionalist to happy fence sitting dualist.

That was pretty much the way I saw it for a long time as well. I do believe that it takes a bit more gumption to wear a solid color modern variant than it does to wear a traditional tartan kilt simply from that standpoint of familiarity and public perceptions.

Oh, you know me!

For many years I was a traditionalist (well, there was no choice - that's all there was!) Then, about seven years ago, the bubble burst when first Howie (TFCK) and then Steven (Utilikilts) began to change my world - and THE world!

Now, I am happily buying a new heavy traditional one month, and a light contemporary the next ........ and loving every one of them!

I guess that makes me one very happy dualist.
