Scotch/Irish = Alcoholic

I was out kilted Friday night and when I went to the head there was a slightly inebriated guy using one of the urinals. He noticed me as a I walked in and asked, "Are you Scottish or Irish?"

"A little of both," I replied

"I'm sorry," he countered, "I guess that kinda makes you an alcoholic doesn't it?"

Unsure exactly how to respond I just laughed and said, "I try not to be..."

About this time he finished up and threw me a, "Nice kilt by the way," as he headed out the door.

Well I guess thats how those two cultures have been percieved over the years. I'm sure that not all Scots or Irish are not drunks, at least thats my experience. I hae several scottish and Irish friends that don't even touch the stuff. Oh well could have been worse.

It's pretty obvious that having a dispropotional attachment to alcohol isn't exclusive to any ethnic group. I've often heard the term "alcoholic" tossed around as if it was a compliment in this here part of the world...like it's part of some hard-drinkin', manly, romantic notion of what a guy is supposed to be...pretty pathetic, no? This joker obviously is still stuck in a high school frame of mind and should think about growing up.

Good for you that you let it roll off you. I've had some of those various little ethnic digs thrown at me by people who would, themselves, be quite offended and indignant if I repeated some of those "Archie Bunker" type stereotypes about their particular ethnic group. Some times it's best just to let it go....

When I get comments from drunks - which is rarely - I just consider the source.

We get the image because of Scotch and Irish Whisky. Like most Scots I enjoyed sampling the single malts in my younger day until my liver flared up, after which I stuck to wine for another few years and eventually became teetotal for health reasons. But even in my heavy drinking years I was sober the vast majority of the time and would never have considered myself an alcoholic just because I'm scots and enjoyed a bit more booze than the recommended intake.
