    Tartan thumbnails

    Hi guys

If you're looking for a nice, browsable collection of thumbnails of tartans, you should get a copy of the Alberene Royal Mail Autumn 2006 catalog. The first 28 pages of the catalog are bordered by labelled thumbnails of tartan, for a total of 364 tartans in alpha order.

I suspect if you went to their web site, they'd be delighted to add you to their mailing list if you don't already get the catalog!

    Aye Barb,

    Mine arrived yesterday.

The Scottish Lion used to have something similar. I'd cut out the tartan thumbnails and glue them in my genealogy charts alongside the appropriate clans.

For those who don't want to wait for a catalog in the mail, go here:
    http://giftshop.scottishtartans.org/9oz.htm

There are links to pdf files of similar tartan images, only divided between ancient, modern, and weathered colors.

You can just print your own!

    The Tartan Generator

I’m new around here, so maybe you good folks already know this, but…

There is a very handy utility called the Tartan Generator from Clan Heritage. I think there is a free or demo version, but the paid for one is very good, I use it regularly.

In a nutshell, it constructs a very plausible representation of thousands of tartans on the screen in two scales using the thread counts as a database. You can also select from all the variations of modern, weathered, etc. It is searchable and provides a brief description of each tartan. The paid for version allows you to construct your own tartan on screen. The down side is it is quite slow and the user interface is, lets say, unconventional. It takes a little learning.

    Contact info is:

    Hope this is useful information,

    Jim
