After reading these I went and looked again at Stillwater's website. What is the history or meaning, if you will, behind the "Black Watch" tartan. I know it is sort of a standard tartan but wondered if there was a story behind how it came about or what it specifically stands for. Thanks

Panache, what is the solid black Stillwater like? Is the "shadow tartan" visible? I don't like the look of the solid kilts, but already have one in the blackwatch tartan. If the pattern is easy to see then I will probably end up getting that one after the holidays. Otherwise I may set money aside for a while and try to get a 5 yard USAKilt .

In the Black, the "Shadow Tartan" only shows up in certain light. In the Green (which is sitting in my wife's closet until X-Mass) the "Shadow Tartan" is very apparent always. I believe the Heavyweights are about 6 yards and 13 oz. wool (not sure but if you email Jerry at sales@stillwater.com he can give you the details.) I haven't seen a SWK Saffron in person. Between the Black and the Green I'd recommend the Green. They have lots of pleats, a nice swish, and they represent a good value.

Welcome! I'll put my vote in for Stillwater, but I'd really recommend USA Kilts because for just a little more money, you can have it made to measure--custom fit! I have one SWK [Wallace Economy] and like it very much excpet for the 24" length which on me makes for a very traditional rise [I'm 5'11"].

For some reason I can't edit my posts. Must be a little hiccup with all the new software upgrades. Looking at the picture from the Pleasanton Games, I believe that Michael Steinrok is wearing a Scottish-American tartan kilt, and it's not a Stillwater.

Panche, Please don't call me the tartan police!, but that is the Irish-American tartan.

On the original subject, let me cast another vote for Stillwater, the SWK standards are hard to beat for an introduction to traditionally styled kilts, and any of their products are a great value. Remember for guys just getting started the kilt is just the tip of the iceburg, you still need to invest in belts, sporrans, hose, pins, etc...

hmm Thanks for all the advice. Ill toss the black or green around in my head for a while and buy one or the other once all my Christmas shopping is done with.

Well as far as SWK goes I can't speak for quality yet .. but the price is certainly right. I just placed an order for an acrylic Black Watch, matching flashes and a leather sporran for $115 including shipping. Doesn't get cheaper than that. I would have preffered wool, but I needed cheap.

I've seen almost entirely good feedback about SWK on this forum.
