"Emergency Bagpipe System"
Revenge of the Antipypr!
I have a neighbor who's convinced the only "normal" time to wear a kilt is to play the pipes. So every time I'm wearing a kilt, I must be coming from or going to playing the pipes.

Because I can't wear all ten of them at once!

When asked: "What's the occasion?"
I ususally reply: "It's Tuesday." (Change as appropriate)

I use the line, I'm an old man and I can do as I please. And I've outgrown my jeans.
I too, have left instructions for my passing. If any one at all shows up for the barbeque?wake, the better have on shorts or a kilt. Those wearing suits or ties will bew haunted for life. Those drinking wine will be sickened, and if any masons show up in tuxes, wee heaven help them.

If it's a stranger in a store lineup and I just want to brush off the question, I'll usually just respond vaguely with... "dinner engagement". Even though I eat dinner every day, it plugs the missing variable into the equation and they go away satisfied.
If the situation is a bit more personal, I usually engage in a friendlier discourse.

I don't remember who it was, but someone here posted an explanation that I love: "I needed a new look to go along with my mid-life crisis. It was either kilts or baggy jeans pulled down with my butt hanging out. I think I made the right choice."
Lately I've just been telling people I know that it's just another one of my many idiosyncrasies. That they accept this so quickly seems like it ought to be a little alarming to me.
Regards,
Rex.

My usual response to the "why are you wearing a kilt" question is: It sets me apart from lesser men.
-or-
After a few pints I'll look em square in the eye and say, "Because zippers frighten sheep."
There's a ruder response that I won't go into in this particular thread.

Thank you Robin
I really like this one!!
Standard answer from me (when I am not in the mood to play) "I wear if for my business" and then hand them my card.
When asked if I am Scottish (or yes Irish) my standard answer is "no, I'm Vietnamese, why? If you can keep a straight face is just completely throws them off. I would suggest a modified answer if you are, in fact, Vietnamese.

Haha!
"Why do you wear a kilt?"
"Because I'm Vietnamese"
That would throw them off even more!
Of course it might result in brain shutdown, which wouldn't be pleasant
Jeff.
