If they are snickery about it, just head in this direction.

    Me: "Well, Where's your horse?"

    Them: "Huh?"

Me: "Because trews/pants are for horseback riding!"

Just answer, "Because lassies ask me out for candle-lit dinners when I'm wearing a kilt." ;) When lassies ask me what I'm wearing under my kilt, I usually answer, "It'll cost you dinner by candle light to find out.

Why do you wear a kilt?

Because, up to this point, no man has ever survived trying to stuff me back in to a pair of pants.

It is always good for a nervous laugh or two, but you need to look the right way to pull it off and make it work.

Awesome response... I figure if I can pull of my "leather is murder" response (You saw it too? Great, one more witness to kill.) I could probably pull off this one...

My mother once asked why I wore a kilt....

I told her that I wanted a new fashion statement to go with my mid-life crisis. It came down to either kilts or wearing extra baggy pants down below my behind with my underwear sticking out and, frankly, I don't think I made the wrong choice.

    She laughed and said, Ok.

    slightly more serious kilt response...

I've actually thought a lot about this question. Being a 28 yr old musician/writer stuck in corporate hell a lot of the responses here don't really apply to me. I've used many of the more glib responses but after really thinking about the question I realised I wear kilts because it's a part of my identity. While I'm not 100% scottish I can trace my family on my mother's side back to clan MacDonald so that's the tartan I wear and being a believer in celtic spirituality (I'll leave the religious debate there) I just really believe that for the most part people spend their lives looking for their place in the world. Their "tribe" if you will. Wearing kilts is my way of honoring my past and the "tribe" for lack of a better word that I belong to in the world. Of course I reserve this response for close friends and serious inquiries. Most of the time I resort to, "they're comfortable, so why not?"
