    Too Quick on the Trigger

So I'm in my office in my Cameron Red and Black from Kathy Lare and a cable knit sweater.

My new boss comes by and she asks me to meet a guy with her...a gentleman even older than I. He lights up at my kilt and says with a humorous tone, "Where are your bagpipes?"

My boss is down the hall rounding up more people so I just said with equal humor, "Under me kilt laddie." He smiled.

When we got to the meeting my boss was organizing it turns out the genial guy is the judge from the next town over! He was there to talk about treatment for someone he court ordered over here. Since it was my lunch hour I answered his questions and was excused. He did mention that he was of Scottish blood too and once played the bagpipes.

Thankfully, he didn't seem offended by my quick retort....

Visions of being called down in my new bosses office..."You said what to the Judge!!??"

And, as an aside, last week she took time after a staffing to ask me about my kilts in a matter of fact way and I explained how and why I came to wear them. Not a problem with her. She'd noticed I have a lot of different ones.

Shortly before while we were talking her boss interrupted and made a comment about me wearing a skirt. Just looked at him and said, "If I wanted to dress like a woman I'd wear pants." Both he, and my new lady boss ,who was wearing pants, laughed.

Thank you guys for the great comeback lines...even if I sometimes pull the trigger too soon.

Jeez boss, you coulda told me he was a judge....

Luckily the judge had a sense of humour.

You still have your job, and you made a judge laugh. Yep, I'd say that's a good day of work!

Good retorts delivered with skill, confidence, and a bit of levity, shines a positive light on the kiltie as well as deflecting the nay sayer. It's good to have a few such tricks up the sleeve for such occasions.

Making the judge laugh is a good thing

I volunteer for a group that observes judges in the courtroom and reports ratings to the state judicial council. All the judges I've met (or observed) seem to have a pretty good sense of humor. They have to have a good disposition in order to survive what would seem to be a largely depressing job.

And hey . . . they wear kilts too . . . just kind of longish.

I'm glad to see I not the only one with that problem. My only problem with doing that is I live with all women and we all know what happens when we pop off at the women closest to us . Well I guess that about sums it up.

Thanks for sharing that story with us Ron.
