Finding a Coat / Jacket

I'm looking for a light jacket for this winter, but I am having trouble finding one that looks good with kilts. They all seem to be too long or too sloppy looking. I even tried a size smaller than what I normally wear, but not only does it still look too long [and hence, to me, sloppy], but it's also too tight around the shoulders and chest.

Any recommendations? Something casual, and fairly inexpensive.

On WINDY days, I wear a Peacoat... it's longer and helps to keep the kilt from blowing up.

On REGULAR winter days, I wear Military "flight jackets" (shown here... http://www.uswings.com/ma-1.asp) with my kilt b/c the are warm and cut very high, so it doesn't cover up all that wonderful tartan. They'll cover the top 3 or 4 inches of your kilt (worn traditionally... up above naval) as opposed to most winter coats which come 1/2 way down your rear end.

Light normally does not go along with winter save along the Equator.

Capes and ponchos can be relatively light. If its not too cold I'd just keep to something like a tweed Argyll and add a woolen (tartan) shawl (an oversized scarf or horribly undersized blanket depending upon ones view) to wrap around the neck. It should be relatively easy to make one out of some medium or heavyweight tartan cloth.

I LOVE my MA-1 fihgt jacket ....it really is a 3 season jacket! spring, winter, fall
it all depends on what you wear under it!

heck even with temps in the 30's I wear it with a sweat shirt and ride my motorcycle to work @ 0600 with no problems as far as staying warm!

I can get them here in Tucson for about 48.00 (hmmmmm maybe I should start buying them and doleing them out to you guys @ $5.00 above my cost + shipping and make a few bucks!)

I personally stick with the colors they started with ....olive drab green, navy blue, and black ....you cant go wrong with black....it goes with everything.
at present I am using a navy blue one for work ( goes with the uniform)
and a black one covered in dropkick murphys patches, St. andrews cross, and a black /silver american flag on the right sleave

In your case, define casual. One man's casual may either be another's dress or another's sloppy.
Do you want a bomber-style jacket (like most "flight jackets" and fleece lined ones from LL Bean or Land's End)?
Would a "pea/pee" coat work? Try a department store or an military surplus store.
What about a shorter "trench" or "duster" style?

The style one is interested is has A LOT to do with where to look and what YOU are looking for.

I wear either a "bomber" style cut (essentially a waist coat, NOT the vest-stuff) or a wool formal/dress long coat (if wearing over another jacket, like an argyle/cut down "coat and tie" style).

What general style are YOU interested in?

Also, just HOW COLD and HOW WINDY are conditions in which it would be worn, a HUGE factor in the appropriate jacket type?
It gets cold here (to the teens or 20s F, but usually in 40s most "cold" days), but not FRIGID (0 F or below). SO what I wear may or may not be appropriate for youir case.

That jacket would be perfect, actually

I live in SoCal, and any jacket I've bought in the past has been too heavy in winter. Temps during the day range from the upper 50's to upper 70's [seriously, it's ridiculous]. So, the rare occasion a jacket is needed, [at night for example] something like the MA-1 would be perfect.

Living in Georgia, I am finding that a decent polar fleece worn over a long sleeve turtleneck does a great job. If it's below freezing I layer a fleece vest underneath.

As most fleeces breath (allowing wind in), using it as an inner layer/insulation under a windbreaker is actually QUITE effective. I use this combo regularly around cold top down driving in mid-winter and am comfortable.

(WARNING: this is for just below freezing and above temperatures. For FRIGID, please use sense and generally advised clothing that keeps all parts and extremeties at normal operating tempratures.)
