First attempt for hockey kilt
Since the Sabres run into the playoffs last year, I have had an idea to make a two tone kilt. At that point thier colors were red and black so the kilt was going to have black fabric from top to about eight inches from the bottom, then a four inch red stripe and then another four inches of black. Well this year the Sabres are doing well again, and although they have changed their uniforms to a 'slug' looking thing, I have decided that I am going to create the two tone hockey kilt. I have made an x-kilt and that came out well so I thought I would try this:

The plan is to pleat the yellow the same way the blue is pleated, then sew the yellow onto the blue, this will allow for the yellow to show properly when the pleats swing.
I bought the fabric today the blue is a heavy poly cotton $4.47 per yard, the yellow is just normal poly cotton really light $3.16 per yard, so total cost of fabric was $24.50, the blue is double width so I have two cracks at that. I will try to update this thread as I complete parts of the kilt. Right now I am washing the fabric, probably don't need a picture of that.

I'll have to watch to... though I'll have to go with the Crimson and Blue of the Avalanche... or maybe some black and gold for the Bruins!

What a clever idea. I hope you take lots of photos of the kilt being made so we can see how you do it, and that you tell us in detail about the problems you run into, if any, and how you resolve them.

Keith,
Keep us posted. This looks like a very interesting project.

Step one
Fabric was washed, pleats were drawn out on the blue material, my waist is 37.5 hips are 44, so I have a 19.5 front apron, and need 24.5 inches in pleats, the pleats will be 4.75" with a one inch reveal. I drew them out the first time and they were not straight, so I took them all out picked a new color and laid the yellow on top of the blue at the bottom. The yellow is only 17 inches tall, I don't want yellow above the fell, now as I fold the pleats I am creating creases in both pieces of fabric. When the pleats are drawn and folded in I will post pictures.

That is an ambitious undertaking. I can see the yellow appliqued to the apron . I would not recommend trying to make the yellow work in the pleats. The time and effeort tequired of this are going to make you crazy!

Judging by the dry runs I have done, with paper and fabric, I don't think it is going to be too tough. I hope to find out today or tomorrow. It will be about the same as the applique on the front, after I cut it out. I am still working on the pleating so we will see how bad it gets to be.

If this doesn't work out for whatever reason, you might want to try sewing a team crest to the front apron instead. Then there would be no doubt as to your team loyalties.!

I have a black stillwater economy with the old sabres logo on it, that was the start of the idea. If it doesn't work, I will probably just take the blue that I have left over and put a slug logo on it and call it a day
