Tartan ID ?

Here's a photo of a lass taken at the Texas Ren fest, I saw her and some others there wearing this tartan, I think they are in a performance group. Amyway, I really like the tartan, but never got a chance to ask them about it...

Any Ideas? :confused:

Carolina it is. I have a four yard box pleat from Matt (as well as an avatar) in that tartan. I was born and raised in the Carolinas so when I saw Matt's article about it last year I had to have one. Pictures often don't do it justice but this one seems to have captured it well.

That looks like the Carolina cotton material carried by The Scottish Weaver.

As for WHY it would be so prominant at a Texas Ren Faire is beyond me . . . UNLESS, there are that many Carolina transpants there . . .:confused:

Did a local SCA kingdom or Scottish group adopt it as "their" tartan?

It also is the official state tartan of NORTH Carolina-> adopted about a decade before SOUTH Carolina.

And . . . YES, North and South Carolina have the EXACT SAME official state tartan.

Thanks for the photos Zardoz, I followed them up on your website and lost almost an hour browsing through them. Wonderful stuff, it was really refreshing to remember that there are people out there living with magic and imagination.

It is based on a Royal Stewart tartan. The Carolina Colonies were named for the Stewarts (Charles II) as Charles is Carolus in latin. You can read Matt Newsome's article about the tartan on his website at http://www.scottishtartans.org/carolinatartan.html .
