I always wear a shirt that is complimentary in color to the kilt, and match my hose to that.

I'll second Highland Thrower on matching the kilt hose to the shirt. However, I will say that you can't go wrong with Oatmeal; they go with just about anything. It's nice to coordinate the kilt hose to the predominant colour in your shirt though.

Royal Stewart has LOTS of colors in it, so your options are many...

    Black
    Cream

Welcome Saecoman. There's some nice tones in the Royal Stewart namely the blue and since the white and yellow are so close together you can use off white (maybe). The other option is a green, maybe the lovatt green as it's the complimentary to red. So I was thinking off-white (cream) and blue flashes. Or white with tartan flashes, but since the kilt is such a stunning and bright tartan you should ground it a bit with some darker colours; blue hose and tartan or white flashes. found a good link in your continent with these:

Let us know how you go.

    Dia Dhuit!

Royal Stewart is nice because you can match so many colours of kilt hose to it. I would go with the same suggestions that Rocky put forward.

I still like Oatmeal for formal and colours for more casual. The oatmeal will really show off your flashes, not hide them on a colour background.
Lot's of options to choose from and most of them are usally wearable with more than one kilt. I only have a few colours that I interchange with the kilt i'm wearing and the occation i'm attending.
Oatmeal dosn't stand up in the dust or rain soaked mud of a weekend festival. Black, olive green and blue hide the dirt and beer spillage of a good night at the concert beertent.
