I believe the original Gaelic to be Mac an Toiseach, which if you are familiar with any Irish politics, the modern title of their "President" is Toiseach, though I think they pronounce it "TEE shuch" as opposed to the Scots Gaelic "TOSH uch"... Conincidentally, from my Gaelic dictionary, I discovered that toiseach also means beginning or origin! In Kentucke where my Mom's people are from we say MAK-n-tush!
My mom met someone who tried to tell her that the name should be pronounced "Mc-KIN-tish"; needless to say, there was quite a discussion!
It's interesting that the present Chief of Clan Chattan apparently lives in Zimbabwe. Has anybody visited him?

It was my understanding that the chief of Clan MacKintosh also served as the chief of clan Chattan, which is a confederation of clans. Currently, John MacKintosh of MacKintosh, the current clan chief is living and teaching in Singapore. I'll call our local clan MacKintosh convener later tonight to varify this and see what other info I can get which may be relevant.

This year the Clan Chattan Association held their meeting August 3rd at Moy Hall, the MacKintosh estate. Anyone interested in learning more should log on to www.clanmackintoshna.org then click The Mists of Moigh link. That is our clan news letter. There are some interesting articles there.

Hi, flairball. I would be very happy to hear that the chiefships had been reunited. They were split in 1938, following the death of the 28th Chief of Clan Mackintosh (23rd of Clan Chattan), when the captaincy of Clan Chattan became vested in a separate branch of Clan Mackintosh (something to do with the chief not designating the chiefship of Clan Chattan in his will, I think). I can't remember all the details, but I can dig something up once you've talked to your local convener if you like. I think the split was pretty much due to an oversight, and it messed up what had been in place for a long time, so I would be happy to hear that the Chief of Clan Mackintosh was the Captain of Clan Chattan once again.

Macman, I spoke with the local conveners wife, who happens to be the clans treasurer, earlier and inquired about this. John MacKintosh of MacKintosh is indeed the chief of both Clan MacKintosh, and Clan Chattan. The chief of Clan Chattan can be changed however to the chief of any other clan in the federation if the federation (Clan Chattan) votes otherwise.

You got me curious, flairball, so I checked the Standing Council of Scottish Chiefs' website. It has Malcolm K. Mackintosh of Gwelo, Zimbabwe as the Chief of Clan Chattan.
    http://www.clanchiefs.org/chiefs.html
It could be that their site is out of date, as they still have Lachlan as the Chief of Clan Mackintosh in their clan history, but it does tie in with what I had read previously. But I'm still puzzled  . Does your convener know how the two chiefships were reunited?

Macman, I don't know the answer to this. I'll call the convener when I get a chance, probably tomorrow. Have you checked the Clan MacKintosh N.A. web site? There is a contact link there. That maybe a good resource. If the convener can't answer the question (doubtful, he's very knowledgeable when it comes to clan business) I'll try one of the contact links.

    Smile Hi there clansman

I too am from Clan MacIntosh. My brother in fact holds both names i.e. John MacIntosh Glennie. We are from the south african part of the clan, although I now live in london, after having spent 3 years returning to my roots near Aberdeen/Inverness. I believe there are glennie's in south america too.
    best wishes. Cat

I am no expert on Clan MacIntosh or Clan Chattan, but as I understand it,even with the centuries of wheeling and dealing, since 1947 the two clans have had a Chief of their own---both with the name MacIntosh(same family too) and as far as I am aware they are still two clans as of that date.To clarify the difference, you have The MacIntosh of MacIntosh Chief of Clan MacIntosh and I am sorry I don't know the christian names, so Mr ? ? MacIntosh of Torcastle is the title, still to this day,of the Chief of Clan Chattan.
