    It is not really possible to get a good ID on a tartan in a picture like this due both to it being in black and white, and also because there is not a whole lot of detail of the tartan showing.

    But, if I had to make a guess -- and that is all it is, my best guess -- I would suggest the Louise tartan, designed in 1871 for the marriage of Princess Louise to the Marquiss of Lorne.

    Taking a second look, I don't think it's the Princess Lousie tartan. Probably a fashion tartan (unnamed).

    Too bad the frock is not still in the family!
