I think it's unanimous.

I know they're pricey, but once you have a pair in your hands I think you'll agree they're a real bargain. Freedom Kilts' Heritage Hose are hands down the best hose I have, and I do have several pair of Gaelic Themes hose. Not only are they most definitely not see-through, they're probably bullet proof as well! And they support this forum, so they deserve our support.

I bought the cotton kilt socks.

The wool socks are very similar except that they are made with a wide ankle to fit the larger calves. The cotton ones are a bit more fitted at the ankle but still fit my 18" calves.

I've not tried the wool socks since I prefer the fitted ankle but one day I hope to pick up a pair, for research purposes

The only catch to the cotton socks is you may need to wear a thin inner ankle sock to protect the sole of your foot from the fibers of the hose.

What exactly do you mean about wearing another sock? Are the fibers itchy etc?

I've been looking for either 100% cotton or 100% wool kilt hose for awhile now and havn't been able to find any before just now, the cotton kilt socks look very promising. How much of a fold over do they have? and will they fit a fairly big guy like me? (6')

Any help would be much appreciated

The cotton fibers are a lot thicker than what you would see in an athletic sock so they can become a bit uncomfortable to stand on after a while. I wear a very thin nylon ankle sock under mine to provide more cushion. I got the thin sock from Campor similar to these

I'm about 6' with an 18" long lower leg x 18" around and they fit me very well. I fold them over twice and get a cuff about 1/2" thick x 3" or 4" tall.

I bought a pair of kilt hose from North of Saint Andrews at first and they look nice with the knot work designs but they are made for smaller legs. The only fold over once, and the cuff stretches so far it distorts the design as well as ends up less than 1/4" thick, if that. Add to that, I'm constantly having to pull them back up even with flashes.

Can you do better than HDG? Sure but you will pay a lot more. For $8, you won't find a better deal and get a sock that actually does the job.

I have found that wearing a thin sock liner ( trouser sock} the same color under my hose helps keep the color contrast the same and helps keep my hose in better shape at the heel.

This has been discussed in the past and it appears that Matt Newsome has a lead on some kilt hose for the largely calfed that he will be stocking in th new year...contact him.

Sorry I missed this thread earlier. It must have been one of the 1300 or so new postings I missed over Christmas!

The hose referred to will be part of the Lewis kilt hose line you can see here:

I have the option of ordering them "fully fashioned" (which essentially means that there is extra room built into the calf). The details are still being worked out, but the cost should only be a little higher (about $5 or so). If anyone is desperate to have a pair before I can get them up and on the web site, just call me at the museum and I'll see about ordering one for you.

Also, if you scroll down to the bottom of our kilt hose page (link above), you'll see we also offer completely hand-knit, made to measure kilt hose. These are more expensive, of course, but are made to *four* different measurements taken off of your foot and leg, including calf, so they can be made any size you need. Our knitter is finishing up a pair now for a customer with 22" calves. These are made solid and will last practically forever, so think of it as an investment.

Or you can always hang out at the local yarn shop and try to make good enough friends to knit you hose.... :-)

I'm anxious to get a pair (or three, or six ) of those Matt, but I can wait until you've got the deal finalized.

I highly recommend a pair of made to measure, from whatever supplier, for my fellow big-calf friends. If nothing else, get a good pair for your formal outfit, it just looks much better.
