    Another Time In history

    RiverKilt,

It was interesting to see that Your father flew support for the Dieppe raid. My great uncle was part of the Army Ranger Raiding force. Got bagged and was sent packing to a POW camp. Another spot in time when our relatives crossed paths. CR66

Great Kilt by theway I may just call Kathy and order on to wear in honor of the RAF who supported my relatives on the ground in WW2!

    For sure CR66,

Dad never talked about the war unless he was drunk...and then only a few episodes...after he died we found notes, sort of like a journal, of some of the horrors of war.

He never talked about Dieppe. Around that time he wrote home in response to his father's asking if he was "In it." He responded that yes, he was "In it." From what I've been able to find out about the air cover at Dieppe the RAF marshalled everything they had. An Operational Training Unit was just that, operational. When my grandfather died he had a lot of period magazine articles about Dieppe which seemed to confirm that action. Dad flew a few Spitfires, but mostly the Hurricane.

He also had an RAF 1942 pin he wore on his Army Air Corps uniform along with the miniature RAF wings on his right breast.

Have thought of using both as "kilt pins" for the RAF tartan kilt but the pin is too valuable and the metalic thread in the mini wings has long since discolored.

A little while ago my brother and I presented a shadow box to our father - a tribute to our grandad in WWI. We included his medals awarded. Since his medals are long gone we found replacements online. I'd recommend checking out http://www.egframes.co.uk/ to get a copy of a crest or medal to use as a kilt pin. They also have Victoran Glengarry badges for those inclined.
