Dad never talked about the war unless he was drunk...and then only a few episodes...after he died we found notes, sort of like a journal, of some of the horrors of war.
He never talked about Dieppe. Around that time he wrote home in response to his father's asking if he was "In it." He responded that yes, he was "In it." From what I've been able to find out about the air cover at Dieppe the RAF marshalled everything they had. An Operational Training Unit was just that, operational. When my grandfather died he had a lot of period magazine articles about Dieppe which seemed to confirm that action. Dad flew a few Spitfires, but mostly the Hurricane.
He also had an RAF 1942 pin he wore on his Army Air Corps uniform along with the miniature RAF wings on his right breast.
Have thought of using both as "kilt pins" for the RAF tartan kilt but the pin is too valuable and the metalic thread in the mini wings has long since discolored.
