Amerikilt question

I just noticed that they don't require a seat measurement on their order form, does anyone know how they determine the correct seat size? I ordered a UK once and gave the wrong seat size by accident and rendered the kilt totally useless to me. I'm afraid if I order one of these the standard size they make may not fit...

They hang off of the hips. They are not a custom fitted kilt.

People do find them quite comfortable however.

So if they are worn low, the seat size doesn't matter?

Sort of. Skinny people can wear them up higher with little worry. Solid folk should measure down around their hips to make sure they get a kilt that is wide enough, and use this as their waist size measurement. Cause if you have say, a 40 inch waist and 48 inch hips, there is going to be a problem. The solution is, of course, to measure around your hips, and use the 48 inch measurement as the waist size selected when you purchase. And then, wear it low.

I'm a fat dude so I tend to wear them low anyway, I just made a huge gaffe when ordering the UK. what a waste! I'd need to lose some major weight for that kilt to ever fit.

Well, you can always sell the UK kilt in the for sale forum here, and probably recover most of your cost.

Most of these "hip hugger" kilts have about a 10% taper. Ball park figure mind you. That said, cinching the kilt tight around a waist narrower than your hips will make the pleats flare out in weird and crazy ways, the fell, which may not be sewn down on some will rumple and twist, and your aprons will pucker up tighter than Don Knots sucking lemons.

If you are a gentleman of substance, I recommend you speak with Robert at RKilts or Steve at Freedom Kilts about an actual fitted kilt. It is not much more than a UK in cost, and you will get a kilt that sits where YOU want it with all of the right measurements.

UK doesn't take a seat size either, only waist and length.

huh, I thought when I ordered it they asked for a seat size. This was some time ago, so perhaps I am mistaken, I just know that when I got it, the waist fit fine but the butt was unacceptably tight...like girl pants tight.

Don't know if this helps.

I have four AmeriKilts. They all have a two and one half inch wide waistband, then the pleats are sewn down for 4" below the bottom of the waist band. They do flare out and the hem is definately wider than the waist.

The obvious solution is to e-mail Michael at Amerikilt (info on their website) and ask what their typical hip measurement runs for your waist size kilt. I have two AKs, am normal build, and their standard size fits very well. If your hips to waist sizing normally fits a pair of jeans comfortably, you will probably not have any trouble with Amerikilt's fit.
