I have been known as "Sidewalk", an old knickname from some of my early riding buddies, and more recently as "Offramp" a newer knickname from the club I rode with for years.

In college I got the nickname Elwood after doing Blues Brothers imitations with a friend and then "Moonman" because of stuff I did on stage at a show by The Amazing Kreskin (those who know his work will get the idea). I've met many friends from a horse racing forum I go to and I have no problem with them calling me Java or Java Gold when we meet up. Here, my name is just my name so it's no big deal. The other thing is that I can always tell where I know someone from - if it's family related or through my mother in some way, I am called Christopher but if I met you on my own it is always Chris. I'll answer to anything because I generally forget people's names anyway.

Regarding the cell phone issue: My twelve year old son sync'd his Palm with my Outlook, which then added all his buddies to my Razr phone. I don't know who most of them are (all nicknames).
I respond to my online name, or my older nickname Doc. I try not to respond to my real name. Imagine being saddled with this:
Dick Irwin Wythe Passmore Jr.
Thanks Dad... had to name a son after himself. I was called 'Dickie' through public school, and still by people who haven't seen me for thirty years, and a few elderly aunts. Doesn't really fit a fourty year old with a goatee, a shaved head, and a labret!
Shandy... I feel your pain.

This turn into a name your nicknames?
In high school I was known mainly as BBQ beard, once I got out it turned into roadrash after my bad wreck and now everybody at work cals me rockstar (my boss describes me as the one on the jobsite that looks like I'm in a band). I answer to neo, I've had it on yahoo for almost 10 years and no I didn't rip it from the matrix movies. DJ is my initials I was named after my dad Danny Joe Beard Jr and I've been going by DJ since I was born.

If I have a son he will likely be a weirdo just like me... I fully intend to name the boy Durendal, named after the sword of Roland the Paladin.

Hmmm, I have probably the most common male first name. The one that, unfortunately, is also reserved for an appliance in the bathroom... Should consider changing my name to American Standard or Kohler... Hmmm... Middle name's Harmon, which once was changed to Herman by a kid in my 4th grade class back in '86... Also have been saddled with the "Johnny" nickname ever since I was a kid. It was cute when I was 5, but now that I'm 31, I *REALLY* wish my family would stop calling me that. Much prefer "Nhoj" - pronounced "Nawdge".
