Talking Tartan Day (4/6) Kilt Night in Washington, DC?

    Okay, here goes...

Would there be some interest in getting together for a kilt night on Tartan Day in Washington, DC? It could be a gathering point for DC, Maryland, and Northern Virginia (and possibly further afield, it's up to those kilties to make the call for themselves), and as it's Tartan Day in the seat of the government who proclaimed it thus in Congress Assembled, it seems appropriate.

Please keep in mind: I've never attended a kilt night, I've never organized a kilt night, if there's someone who has in the DC-area, let's discuss here. My (possibly naive) impression of a kilt night is people get invited, a location is determined, a night is set, and people show up in kilts. What am I missing?

Possible gathering points include: the Flying Scotsman, or the Brickskeller or RFD (yes, it's all about the beer for me), and others I know not of: suggestions welcome.

Show me your interest, and I may see you on Friday night, April 6, at a location to be determined!

About the Flying Scotsman: I've never been, but it's apparently one of Capitol Hill's best-kept secrets, and it's just a few blocks away from Union Station, so travelling by Metro should be easy (and advisable after a wee dram or two). I've sent them an e-mail to investigate, and may stop by sometime soon to see what it's like. If you know of it, reply to this thread to let us all in on it. I used to live on Capitol Hill, and passed Flying Scotsman's location often, but moved out of the city (and consequently changed my commute) before its current incarnation in 2003.

I'd be interested. Getting into the city on Friday rush hour is kinda dicey but it should be doable.

Yeah, I always think that going the opposite direction from most commuter traffic, things would be fine, but I'm always wrong. I always figure it's going to take 45 minutes to 1 hour when I'm going anywhere, and if it takes less, well, you know:

Stay tuned for more information; I have to "scout" some locations (int.

it just came to me, as I was seated at my computer registering for X-Marks, wearing my first kilt, looking around the room for inspiration

I might be pursuaded to go elsewhere (especially if it's just me wants to stay in DC -- not much of a kilt night if it's just me who shows up ), but there's something about the only Scottish-themed pub in DC in view of the Capitol building, all Metro accessible...but I have to see if the place is worthy before going too far down the road. It's early days yet.

Anywhere in the metro area works for me - but if the Flying Scotsman is a decent place, then that would be great!

    Further Afield

Sadly, the Flying Scotsman seems to have changed hands or themes. It's now Hamiltons, and as I was on my way to work at 7:30, I didn't darken the door. But I was bummed.

Anyway, some of my homebrewing friends (who are also kilties, but not on X Marks) recommended The Royal Mile Pub in Wheaton, MD. And, though their Scottish beer selection is pretty limited, they're supposedly one of the best for Scotch in the DC area. And their beer list is admirable, even if not centered on beers from Scotland.

    So, who's for it?

    Let me know.

Works for me and I already have leave scheduled for the week. I should be back from FLA by Friday.
