We just flew through LAX (again) on the way to and from Sydney. The security there has to be the most arbitrary, capricious and rude implementation I've seen in all my travels across the Lower 48 states and abroad.

I worked for TSA for a couple of years in various capacities. Here's what I can offer as advice.
If'n yer gonna wear a kilt, go with something that has no snaps or buckles and it will stay on if you take your belt off. Also, strip every bit of metal off your body. Just take your shoes off before you go through.
sgain dubhs are a pretty sold no go in the states. Ditto pins.
It's a violation of policy for males screeners in the US to screen females and vice versa. This means that most males won't know how to wand someone in an unbifurcated garment.
I flew in my sport kilt a while back but I made damn sure that I wouldn't set the alarm off. Way more comfortable.
