Strap in on snug and look at yourself in a mirror - be sure the bottom of the kilt (the selvedge edge) hits you no lower than mid knee - a more traditional look is the top of the knee.

If you kneel on the floor and straighten your back (so you're "straight up" with your knees on the floor) and the bottom selvedge of the kilt is touching the floor, move the waistband up a bit.

Top of the kneecap is where you want it, or maybe half-an-inch higher than that.

You don't want it completely covering your kneecap. That'd be what J. Charles Thompson (author of "So You're Going to Wear the Kilt") calls the "trollopy" look.

If it was only an inch or so, I would say to just pull up the kilt a little more, but for that much you will probably have to hem it.

By the way, I assume you tried it on with the top at least at the navel or higher. You want to wear it at the proper height. It should not be worn as most people wear their trousers, that's too low for a kilt. It may feel strange to you the first few times, but that's the way to go.

I am wearing my SWK Hunting Mcleod as I write this and the top edge of the kilt is at least 1 inch above my navel and the bottom edge of the kilt is right at the middle of my knee. I think Dave mentioned it does take some getting used to wearing something this high.

GreenDragon; I agree. I was at first quite uncomfortable with the over/above the navel wear. However, I've grown accustomed to the feel. I now easily adjust to the differing feel between UK's and SWK's. My length issue is still to be adressed. I like my hemline above the knee in all but two of my kilts. My UK leather and the Workman I like at the knee.

How do you like the tartan Green? I'm ordering one in the next day or two. I like the SWK that I currently have and am looking forward to adding to the collection.

We're planning to go to IrishFest in Milwaukee in August and I'm hoping to have 3 or 4 kilts to choose from for that weekend.

Green Dragon, hemming is definitely an option. I had my SWK Saffron done at a place in the mall for about $30. Just don't cut any fabric off. The material was turned under and blind stitched. After pressing you can't tell the hem is there unless you get REALLY close. BTW, this is one version of how to wear that great looking kilt.
