I only wear off-white hose with my band uniform. I prefer green, either rifle or lovat, depending upon the tartan I'm wearing, with red flashes. All of my kilts are predominately green with prominent red stripes except for the saffron, which gets rifle green with saffron flashes (Army style), and diced or Argyll hose with my formal wear or parade dress (spats).

Me too. I generally wear white to dress up (though I don't dress up very often or very far) and cream to dress down.

When it looks good...it is good
Formal wear...off white is always good (because it's generally accepted )
When I saw a picture of Todd wearing black hose with his formal outfit...it looked perfect to me. Also seen a piper with a saffron kilt wearing black hose...looked great.
Black hose look well balanced...they match with formal jackets.
I'm a big fan of tartan hose...expensive? yes...but so is the rest of the formal outfit (jacket, dress sporran) and they'll last a lifetime.

How's the length?
Length is perfect.
I'm 5'8" with a 30" inseam and they are long enough that when it's super cold out in the fall, to keep my knees warm before the match starts, I pull them up over my knees.
FYI, I have a MacQueen tartan USAK casual (mostly red/black) and I wear the black with red top socks (which they hapeen to be out of for two weeks btw) and it looks perfect. I don't pull them up much, just a little below the mid point of my shin and fold the top red band down so it's about 1" tall. They look perfect. I'll post a piccie later. Going kilted to a concert tonight, will be sure to get a few.

Well, well! After reading this thread, it seems it doesn't matter what hose one wears, when.
I usually wear cream-coloured hose for day time or informal occasions and sometimes, dark (black?) hose for night time, but always wear either navy or dark green hose for formal occasions. I match the dark coloured hose to either the kilt, or to my navy Argyll jacket or shirt. I can't see me ever wearing white hose, and I attend formal-dress white/black-tie functions.
For this Saturday's kilted pub night, I'll either wear off-white hose with my MacTavish SWK standard (or black, to match the shirt and tartan) with red garters (match kilt), and for our SOKS Scottish Rite night, I'll probably wear my off-white hose as to not be over-dressed while wearing a jacket. Also, as previously mentioned, the lighter-coloured hose, show off the laces with brogues.
I am in the market for colour-coordinated BALMORAL HOSE from http://giftshop.scottishtartans.org/hose.htm for my formal functions, but I think I have a sister-in-law who may surprise me with a hand-knit present next Christmas. I'd better take my measurements soon. ;)
