I survived!
Hey all, I made it through my first attempted at competing in the Scottish games without making a fool of myself or getting hurt. It was the 7th annual Rhino Games in Exeter, Ca, at Mark and Sabrina Robinson's home (nice, nice folks!).
The weather was great. The people were freindly and the weights were heavy! I got a lot of advice from the other athletes that I'll be passing on to anyone that wants it - AlanH?? I don't know why I waited until I was 43 to give this a try. If you haven't tried competing yet, what are you waitying for? Give it a shot! Now starts the training for the Woodland Games!

Congratulations Tim.
There's nothing like the comradery of fellow competitors. There willingness to help a new athlete is evidence of what a great bunch they are!

Isn't it great? I love competing because it's always so much fun, even if you don't throw well. (Which is always with me)
And the pros always are willing to offer good advice:
"How can I improve my weight over bar?"
"Throw higher."
It is truly a great sport.

Some play bagpipes - but not me; some throw heavy rocks - but not me; some make kilts - now we're talkin'!
Congratulations on your competition, and good fortune in your training. I'll be in Woodland to cheer you on.

And some men can drink in heroic quantities. That shouldn't be me.

Congratulations on your first competition, Tim. I've got to hand it to you guys who do the heavy events. I'm not built for it myself, but I can appreciate watching you guys who do it, and the cameraderie among the competitors is obvious. All the best to you in the upcoming "games season"!

Well done Tim!
Are you going to give us some details of what weights you threw and distance or do I have to wait for Beer Night?
Cheers

Well done, Tim. I've taken part in some of the running events at Highland Games in my younger days, but never tried any of the traditional sports such as throwing and caber tossing.

Good show. I know you enjoyed it.
The only time I even tried something like that was at the "clan challenge" at the Culloden Highland Games in Georgia a few years back. As I was in the thirde even--weight throw--it occured to me that I was the only person out there over 40 and that I had no business being there at all. There was my back to think about and a' that an' a' that.
Even then, I immensely enjoyed learning about the events. It was cool, even if I was too old.
