So, the girls have their combined birthday party this weekend, which will likely involve swimming in the pool as the weather has been very nice and we have solar heat for the pool. Anyway, I have been puttering around making sure the chemicals are in balance, the pool is clean, sweeping of the deck, etc.. Anyway, I noticed that the pump pressure was a bit high, which usually indicated that the filter media has become dirty and it needs to be "backwashed". This is simply running the filter with an outlet open to allow the filter media to be cleansed and then you add more filter media (diotamceous earth for the curious). The backwashing means that you turn the filter valve from its normal position to one where it can flush the system out throw a length of 1 1/2" flexible hose. Well, I laid the hose out (did I mention it has not been replaced in the 3 years we have owned the place and likelt not for 5 years before that?), then positioned myself to next to the filter and where I could reach the pump switch, which coincidentally placed the discharge hose between my feet and directly under my navy Stewart USAK (do you see where this is going?). So I reached over and turned on the pump. Everything was fine for about 3 seconds, then WHOOSH! a weak spot in the discharge gave out right under me and I was all of a sudden in the middle of a very wet Marilyn Monroe moment! Dang was that water cold in a very tender place!

Anyway, I quickly moved to the side while I completed the backwash cycle and made a repair to the discharge hose (i.e. I cut off the part with the hole in it!) and finished my chores. I am really glad I was wearing a USAK! It would have been he!! with a wool kilt. The USAK, I just allowed to stop dripping while I finished up and then hung up on hangar for a few hours. I know that wool wicks moisture away, but not sure I want to subject it to that!

Just thought others might enjoy a funny story.

That is one of the many nice things about the USAK. Not only is it inexpensive enough that the thought of having to replace it isn't ruinous, but the thing just stands up to wear tear and unexpected spills like nobody's business.

Thank you for the good laugh. When I read the title of your thread I was thinking that you would be talking about "man baths". And what i mean by that is we have a pool at the house, and during the summer, there are plenty of days that i'll go for a swim before i go to work. I don't usually take a shower afterwards because I feel clean. (I'm not sure if i truly am clean, but oh well)

Diatomaceous earth .... hate the stuff, most of the ground in Laguna Niguel, Aliso Viejo (whatever, off Moulton Parkway and Allicia) portions of Orange County, CA have large amounts of that shtuff. Dry and dusty but still has a high moisture content so you can't put water on it to kill the dust and if you do it becomes an instant slip and slide. Hard to park on too, I moved a 60 ton scraper by standing on one of the tire lugs with my whole 140 pounds of weight (ok so that was a while ago), good thing there was another rig in front of it to stop it's rol into the canyon.
And then the cold water .... self explanatory. Brrrrrr
