I think they are supposed to represent cadadh or "bag hose", however obviously without the foot part. Guessing he was going for the "look at first glance" instead of functional woven diced hose. I think your right though, looks like a combo of modern and old garb.

The lad on the left kinda looks like James from SK (ain't sayin' he is, just looks like ...), whomever ought ta slap his buddy and have a good talking to with said buddy's wife for lettin' her hubby out the house like that. (streetspeak, drop the "of")
