headwear, bandanas: do or don't

On windy days, I have to wear something. Otherwise, dreadlocks dreadlocks everywhere.

If you ever had bullwhip crack you right in the eyeball, you'd know why I gotta tie those buggers down.

Sure, My order of preference is nothing, Caubeen, ALR (American Legion Riders) beret, bandana. Usually because I have hat hair or need to keep the sweat out of my eyes. There are places here in AZ that won't allow any bandanas in. Never had them question me kilted though. O'Neille

in the middle of summer a wool hat is just too dang warm. I'd love a cooler alternative.

J. Byous Co. makes an unlined "Tropical Weight Summer Wool Balmoral" and a "Cotton Twill Summer Caubeen". I have one of their wool caubeens, and can attest that they're very well made, and well worth the price. Mine was made to order, but worth the wait.

I say wear what you will. I would suggest matching the dominant color of the bandana to the dominant colors of the kilt..but it is your head.

Well, here in the South, the only real decision is whether your camo baseball cap is emblazoned with the logo of your favorite band, beer, college, or sporting goods store. Camo goes with all tartans, but I'm especially fond of Advantage Timber.

I vote with PiobBear. That almost rustic tam is hard to beat.

As I've said before, I wear one often, and it's distinctive, goes with a kilt, but isn't just like everybody else.

I bought one of the unlined "balmorals: (I use the term loosely), and it's basically a cheap wool beret with a robbona and a toorie. I dont' recommend it.

Cotton twill caubeen sounds interesting, but I haven't seen one. I have thought of trying to create some cotton twill or duck balmorals for summer just to see if they wouldn't work after several washings. (I wear my own wool balmorals or the glengarrys summer or winter.) I always wash my wool bonnets several times and let them air dry to make them look good, so I would think that doing that with a cotton twill bonnet might make for a good chapeau!

I'm going to get all bonnets out for a photo shoot soon so you can see them all form a couple of angles. Should make for good conversaton when I post it.

I like the look of a tam or bonnet with a kilt.
