When my 8 yd tank in MaCauley hunting modern (my avatar) got here, there wasnt anything black tie going on, so my first 2, and so far only, outings have both been casual. First time was gambling at a small town in Nevada. Mostly it was just ignored, but there were a few rolleyes looks and a few questions on what tartan it was. Wore with black tshirt tucked in, cream hose pulled up but no flashes, black slip on shoes. No sporran even.
Last week wore it to a rock and gem show, no sporran, black shirt with pockets for the wallet, black hose pushed down with DocMarten steeltoed work boots, complete with a bit of paint/grease etc.
All I need is an excuse and it'll be on. Even though I dont even have a sporran yet.

I very, very seldom get any compliments or comments of any kind (All together now: "Awwwww!") So, if you are getting them, that's great!
Thanks for the encouragement, Hamish!

Yes, it does seem to work like that. I've been out lots of times now, and even my wife is now used to the idea!

I have to report that each time I've been out, I've had nothing but positive comments - and this in East and South London. Nice reactions from shoppers in Sainsburys - including one elderly lady who said to her companion 'Doesn't that man look smart in his kilt...' so I just turned round, shot a big smile at her and said 'Thank you!' and a good conversation followed.
The thing I can't get over is that when wearing the kilt, I get to talk to people I wouldn't otherwise speak to, and they're all friendly. I think the reaction I've enjoyed most so far was from a (trouser-clad) scottish man a DIY Superstore in in Greenwich - I'd gone out casual kilted again (button down shirt, kilt, dark hose and flashes and black day sporran) to buy some lightbulbs, and as I was going out after paying, he called over to me in a broad scottish accent - 'Good oan ya, big man!' and smiled and waved. It fair made my day!
So I'd say to any xmarkers out there who haven't gone out casual yet - have courage and go for it! As others have noted above, the first time is the scariest, and most people are positive and friendly.
The only problem from all this going out casual is I think I now need some more kilts to wear... Hamish, have you any advice, or is the addiction now incurable?
Here's to the power of the kilt!
Best regards

It seems the more I wear the kilt the more confident I feel all about it. And, the more confident I am with myself kilted the quicker I am out and about wearing the kilt!
Go, have fun, don't work at, make it fun! Kilt them, for they know not, what they wear. Where am I now?

You're right, Morrison - wearing the kilt definitely makes you more confident, as well as more comfortable.

I've never minded looking different, but until I started being kilted, I was always somewhat confrontational about it - think typical American biker look. Now, I find myself smiling more, and getting more smiles back - especially from the lasses! Very happily married, but still - whoo-hoo!

I also seem to be wanting more kilts, never thought an "addiction" would ensue.
Wore it to work the first time on St Paddy day, the ladies liked it, some of the guys, not so sure (jealous maybe)? Even went shoppoing after.
Need to get the wife to a movie, just to wear the kilt!

Frog, you're right. I'm really enjoying getting (and giving) more smiles too, especially from lassies. Have we stumbled on a secret of casual kilt-wearing here? I'm finding it's really hard to be down or miserable when you're out kilted. Is this why Hamish always looks like he's having such a great time in all his pictures? The truth is, he really *is* having a great time, and it comes out in the smiles?
Today, I got confirmation that my dear wife understands and supports my casual kilt wearing. She's got used to the idea that every time I go out shopping, I go kilted, but even so, today, it was my turn to be surprised when she came and found me in the house and said 'We need some stuff from Sainsbury's. Here's a list - go and put your kilt on!'
Here's to the power of the kilt!
Best regards
