New kilt, and a question
I picked up my new kilt today. I was ready last week, but I couldn't get free to get it so I went today. It's a 9yrd wool Hunting MacKintosh Made for me at The Athol Brose in Cambridge Mass. Ms. Murray did an excellent job, but I've shed a few lbs since I was measured, so I expect I'll need the straps adjusted in a month or so.
My question concerns sporran loops. Are they standard, or can they be left off? This kilt doesn't have sporran loops. I didn't notice until I got home. I called, but Ms. Murray wasn't there, and her assistant said it was common for a kilt to not have the loops. I've not seen that before, and am wondering what'll keep the sporran strap from sliding down.
Anyway, pics coming soon.

my 8 yard has no loops at all on it and I have not found it to be an issue. If the Sporran strap is done up properly (tight, but still loose) it should sit on your hips and not slide down. I have never used sporran loops on any of my kilts that I can recall.
Enjoy the kilt.

My kilt was made without any belt/sporran loops and both my belt and sporran stay in place just fine. The sporran strap "catches" on my backside and stays up. You can sorta make it out in this picture (me dancing with my sis-in-law at my wedding).

That's all well and good if you have hips! I don't. I would suggest if this is the case with you flairball, have a single loop stitched to the back to help keep things in place.

I have kilts with and without belt loops, and I prefer kilts without. If you wear a belt, in my opinion, the belt in the loops causes the kilt to hang a little "off" as compared with the kilt with no loops. On kilts with loops, I put the belt through, but not the sporran strap.

I too prefer kilts without the loops.
Besides... if you're dancing, the loops make it harder to swing the sporran to your left so you can actually hold your partner without, er, bumping into things...

For most people, this isn't something they need to worry about. If you're worried about the sporran slipping down, though, hook the sporran straps over the tops of the buckles before you put the belt on. No need for loops.

Barb, I read that in your book (or was it on here in a post of yours?). You'll be pleased to know I put it into practice all the time. Great tip.

Congratulations on the new Hunting Mackintosh, flairball! FWIW, I never use the straps for my sporran either.
